What is the difference between CHSP and HCP?

Are you confused about the difference between the Commonwealth Home Support Program (CHSP) and Home Care Packages (HCP)? You are not alone.

Deciding which is the best for you can be difficult to navigate and is likely to depend on your individual needs and financial circumstances.

While both the Commonwealth Home Support Program (CHSP) and Home Care Packages (HCP) offer older Australians the support to stay at home, there are a few key differences between the programs.

  • Provides entry-level support for older people who are still able to manage living at home, but could do with some extra assistance
  • Offers a set menu of basic services with limited choice and flexibility
  • You will receive a government subsidy for the services you need but will be asked to contribute to the cost of your care
  • You can use multiple providers to deliver your services
  • Your eligibility will be assessed by the Regional Assessment Service (RAS)
  • Provides higher levels of support for older people who have more complex needs
  • Enables you to create a tailored support package that will best meet your needs and goals
  • You will receive your own ‘bucket’ of funds to use and can decide how to spend it (depending on your financial circumstances you may be expected to contribute to the cost of your care)
  • You select one provider to deliver all your services
  • Your eligibility will be assessed by the Aged Care Assessment Team (ACAT)
Both Home Care Packages (HCP) and Community Home Supports (CHSP) include services such as

  • Domestic assistance
  • Personal care
  • Home maintenance
  • Home modifications
  • Aids and equipment
  • Nursing care
  • Social support
  • Transport
  • Meals and food services
  • Allied health support
  • Respite care

We understand the aged care system can be difficult and time consuming to navigate. Our home care experts are here to help. Contact us on 1300 660 640 or request an enquiry pack to receive more information.
