The David Buttfield Centre
Low Care
High Care
Dementia Specific Facilities
Baptistcare’s newest Residential Aged Care Facility is The David Buttfield Centre. Beautiful landscaped gardens compliment a thoroughly modern building that has been designed with the comfort and quality of life of the residents in mind. The building is composed of four wings that feature large corridors for ease of movement and spacious common areas that encourage interaction and a real sense of community. Shopping facilities are in close proximity. An intergenerational program has been developed with the North Beach Primary School located next door, where young students have the opportunity to interact with the elderly on a regular basis.
Local Pioneers Honoured
The four wings of David Buttfield Centre have been named in recognition of the market gardening pioneers of the Gwelup area. Bestry House honours the Bestry family who moved into the area in 1926/7 to work a market garden. John Bestry originally came from Poland in 1910. The Cooper family name has been given to Cooper House, recognising a family who purchased a market garden in Gribble Road in 1914. Russell House is named after the Russell family who ran the market garden on the block where the David Buttfield Centre now stands. Another well known market gardening family in the area is the Loncar family who are recognised in the naming of Loncar House.
A Tribute to David Buttfield
David Buttfield joined the Board of the WA Baptist Hospital and Homes Trust in June 1985 and became Chairman of the Board a year later. He held that position for 16 years until his death in 2002. At the first meeting after David joined the Board, minutes show that there was discussion about the need to purchase land for a future aged care facility in the Northern suburbs. Although he never saw that dream realised, David played an integral part in the planning that has resulted in the establishment of the David Buttfield Centre. He had a strong belief in the performance of Baptistcare and his leadership and business acumen were invaluable. A tireless worker in the community, David's work with Baptistcare was just one of many voluntary positions he held with great enthusiasm and commitment. This included his association with the Royal Agricultural Society for 23 years, a member of the Claremont Baptist Church, the Children's Leukaemia and Cancer Research Foundation and a Councillor with the Shire of Serpentine- Jarrahdale.
